Hi. Not sure if there is any real progress on this. Perhaps its too ambitious. I've been thinking lately that application rather than segment targeted flavours of plone are more useful. Plone for intranets, plone for wikis etc.
There are some new thoughts on this ticket at Plonekit at OpenPlans.org. Targeting industry-segments has the powerful advantage of bringing groups of like-minded people with common problems together - that seems to be the lesson merging in the education space, and a clear win with the PloneGov initiative. That said, application-centric releases may be a good idea, too.
